Here it is, my finished board and batten project, as well as a sneaky peak at some of the details from this remodel. It is looking GOOD in there, if I do say so myself.
This was my first board and batten. I have to say, it was a super easy, confidence building project. If you are looking to try something to upgrade a plain wall, this would be a great place to start. I drew out a plan, made some measurements and headed off to Lowes to figure out what wood pieces I wanted to use.
If you’re a visual learner, I think this is the best way to get an understanding of the wood options available to you. I wondered up and down the isles, looking at the framing grade woods (lower quality) and then went a few isles over to the white wood and finish boards (by the trim/crown isle). This is where you’ll find pre-primed boards, and finer quality types of wood, as well as smoother finishes. I went with smooth finish pine, which is one of the cheaper options in that isle. I just looked for pieces that were the thickness I wanted and went with those. I chose a 1×3 for the top rail, a 1×2 to cap it, and the batten strips were a 1/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch slat.
As for tools on this project, I used a jigsaw (one of my favorite tools), a brad nailer gun, and a level. Any saw will work, but the jigsaw is so portable that it is my first choice for a small project that is not at my own home. I measured and marked my heights on the wall, and about 30 minutes later, we had this!
*Sidebar. I will address the hole in the wall. The walls in this cottage are not drywall. They’re also not plaster. They’re like a panelling material that is sort of difficult to work with. Since this portion of the wall is hidden by a bed, we are currently not dealing with it.
Next, I caulked all gaps, filled all nail holes with wood putty, did some light sanding of those filled nail holes and then I got to paint.
Isn’t this paint color just the bees knees? It’s almost a neon coral. So fun, and went PERFECT with my wallpaper – stay tuned for a full workup of the wallpaper experience coming to the blog later this week.
Meanwhile, here are a few more pictures from around the cottage. We are getting SUPER close to the big reveal on this place and it’s going to be GOOD. 🙂
